WHO ARE YOU? Catherine Opie

I first discovered this very interesting photographer when she had a enormous show at The Guggenheim Museum. Her photos use brave colors and subjects that are extremely REAL. She often likes to take photos of the gay, lesbian and trans leather community. Her recent show at Gladstone Gallery is called “Girlfriends”. I recently went to the opening and alot of her fans seem to have walked out of her photos hanging on the wall. Live, Action, Camera!!

BROWN PAPER BEAUTY- Works on Paper by Deborah Turbeville

I have been following this photographer for over a decade. Her work has appeared in many fashion magazines ,but also on the walls of many famous galleries. Her photos have a sense of beauty and calmness. Many are muted in a sepia tone. Her show is at Staley Wise Gallery in New York. Her photos are hung with pins against a backdrop of brown paper. This interesting installation makes her work even more romantic for some reason. Take a trip back in time to many wonderful locations through a well constructed world.

Warhol on the WALL

It’s not all about soup cans, and liz in the warhol world. This wonderful and cool show called Andy Warhol: Unexposed Exposures at the Steven Kasher Gallery till April 3rd is worth seeing. You better run since it is a short exposure. All the celebs are there from the 70’s. The crisp white frames give these photos a clean and clear vision through Warhol eyes.

Don’t you hate it when your friends become successful!

Not in this case… Just read the book “Just Kids” by Patti Smith. This recollection of her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe is all about how these two kids in New York with no money working in book stores, stayed true to their passions. The race to become successful was part of how they lived there lives. We all know that they both are a genius in their craft. I was lucky to hear Patti speak and sing at Barnes and Noble to promote the book. She reads like she sings and sings like she reads. What remains in my head is “Robert would be so happy you all came to this”. Read on…..

BAT-MOBILE BABY

These wonderful watercolors by artist Mark Chamberlain sets a new twist to the classic Batman and Robin animation. The colors emerge into a witty and also romantic body of works. Who ever thought that Batman and Robin would become more than just friends? It happens! I own two of these watercolors and they are available through Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts. The images are highly collectible and become addicting. I grew up watching every episode of Batman. I just love this new take on the boys!!

ROCK OUT IN BROOKLYN

WhoShotRock_335X335

Mick, Michael, and Tina. Rock is Art! Art is Rock! Catch this new exhibit “Who shot Rock” at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The debate of if rock photography is really art, will now be put to rest. With museums of this level putting up a show as such, we now know that rock photography will live forever.

Scary Monsters and Super Freaks

Spike Jonze, not Spike Lee. Get it right! I cannot wait for this movie to come out. I’m running to see it at a IMAX theater. “Where the Wild Things Are” was a children’s book and now is becoming larger than life on the big screen. The wild things in this movie look supernatural. Fantasy freaks. I have not been so excited for a movie in a long time. The creativity from this film is overflowing. I may have to buy the original book to compare. Sounds like fun to me.

WHO ARE YOU? ROGER DEAN

70’s Flashback. I was scouting the bargain bins in Barnes and Noble, and the CD cover of the band YES caught my eye. I immediately ran to the counter. I was mesmerized by the glowing green art work on the cover. I then had a flash back of a coffee table book I had(I didn’t even have a coffee table back then). The artist is Roger Dean. I never forgot his name. His magical rock art was gleaming from many of the albums I collected. Rock can be Art…Art can be Rock !!

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things: Cartier and Bruce Weber

When I first heard about this book and collaboration, I was alittle startled. I just did not see these two going hand in hand. I cannot wait to get my hands on this book. The history, the gems, the boys, the girls, and most of all the elegance. The photographer Bruce Weber and Cartier both exude class, style and beauty. Beauty and the beast this is not…this is more like Beauty squared.
