WHO ARE YOU? Catherine Opie

I first discovered this very interesting photographer when she had a enormous show at The Guggenheim Museum. Her photos use brave colors and subjects that are extremely REAL. She often likes to take photos of the gay, lesbian and trans leather community. Her recent show at Gladstone Gallery is called “Girlfriends”. I recently went to the opening and alot of her fans seem to have walked out of her photos hanging on the wall. Live, Action, Camera!!

MUSIC MANIAC-GOD HELP THE GIRL

NOW: God Help The Girl (2009)
I’m a fool for any music that sounds like a 1960’s soundtrack! This CD is an off shoot from one of my favorite groups called Belle and Sebastian. It is a whirlwind selection of female vocalists singing many types of sounds from the  60’s and 70’s girl group genre. They are all original new songs but sound like they have been dusted off. Get into your convertible car with your sunglasses and blast this CD. You will travel back to another time of beehives and glamour girls.
THEN: DUSTY IN MEMPHIS- DUSTY SPRINGFIELD (1969)
After listening to God Save the Girl, I had to go and dust off one of my favorite classics. Dusty, as you know, has one of those voices that makes you melt. Talk about beehives! She is the Girl! This Memphis CD is sexy, smooth and relaxing. Vintage vanity from one of the best!

TREAT OF THE WEEK- BLACK BAIES

New York is all about black this and black that…well, what about this chic black candle from the classic Diptyque? Go back to the original chic candle in a glass. I started buying these French candles over 20 years ago before all the “others” came along. The Baies fragrance smells amazingly good and is now a classic. Now the company keeps around this scent in a mysterious black glass. Treat yourself and feel sooo New York and sooo super cool!

KELL on REDBULL

Bravo to Bravo for coming up with another riveting show. We all know the fashion world is “cut throat”, but this is crazy! Kell’s stable of 20 year olds all are so wired and wound up, which is actually fun to watch. Kell too. They all talk and act like their water cooler in the office is filled with RED BULL. We know there is alot to do in a day, but maybe this show needs to chill for a second before the next fashion week. Well only for a minute, then back to speed!

BROWN PAPER BEAUTY- Works on Paper by Deborah Turbeville

I have been following this photographer for over a decade. Her work has appeared in many fashion magazines ,but also on the walls of many famous galleries. Her photos have a sense of beauty and calmness. Many are muted in a sepia tone. Her show is at Staley Wise Gallery in New York. Her photos are hung with pins against a backdrop of brown paper. This interesting installation makes her work even more romantic for some reason. Take a trip back in time to many wonderful locations through a well constructed world.

YOU PAYED FOR THOSE HOLES!!

Yes I did, and I’m proud of it!  This is not the first time either. Denim with holes and rips have come and go in fashion and now their back. I recently found this great company Genetic Denim and they have soft denim with great new treatments. Perfect for SPRING. Air vents will help when the weather warms up. Don’t try it at home, these holes are very “strategic”. The cool factor just increased. Rip them to threads!!

Warhol on the WALL

It’s not all about soup cans, and liz in the warhol world. This wonderful and cool show called Andy Warhol: Unexposed Exposures at the Steven Kasher Gallery till April 3rd is worth seeing. You better run since it is a short exposure. All the celebs are there from the 70’s. The crisp white frames give these photos a clean and clear vision through Warhol eyes.

“THE QUEEN IS DEAD”

I had to write this title in honor of Alexander McQueen, because it is one of my favorite  songs and albums by THE SMITHS. For some strange reason, I think Lee loved that song too. British music and British fashion is always way ahead and more creative than most. McQueen being in that category. The news was very sad to hear. Any 40 year old that ends their own life is not good news. His world of gothic design and beauty worked together to create a world we all wanted.

BLAST FROM THE PAST- RHODA (1975)

Valerie Harper played the famous “window dresser” in her spin off series. She was one of my idols and I loved her chic hippie new york 70’s style. Her headbands and caftans gave her a warm and friendly vibe. This DVD of the 2nd season is coming out this month and I can’t wait. It is supposed to be better quality and uncut versions of her amazing show. Val is also making a comeback on Broadway in the show LOOPED. All hands together for VAL.

TREAT OF THE WEEK- This One’s for the Boys

$18.50 to remove dark circles and puffy ness around the eyes!! I’ll take it! This new item from Kiehl’s highly successful “Facial Fuel “line for men, is the answer. Who wants to look like Barnaby Collins from Dark Shadows? I know vampires are all the rage, but no thanks. This item is small enough to fit anywhere and great for travel.  It was sold out for weeks and is now back in stock. Try it…you’ll like it! Eye Balm, what a concept!!
