TREAT OF THE WEEK – CANVAS TOTE FOUND!

I have been searching for a camouflage tote for months.  I missed the opportunity for the marc by marc jacobs tote.  Sold Out!  I was walking past the window of American Eagle Outfitters and this tote jumped out at me.  I quickly went into the store to feel the canvas.  I fell in love with this washed canvas feel, very little logos, LLBean  shape and the $39.00 price point.  So I decided to treat myself.  I walked out of the store using this bag since the very hip salesman told me I looked like I walked in with it.  I guess it was “sooo me”!  The bag has the look and feel like it has been somewhere and back. Very rugged and rare!

TREAT OF THE WEEK – SLIDE INTO SPRING

Color My World! I stumbled on these TREFOIL SLIDES by Adidas in their “Originals” store in Soho.  I was loving but also afraid of color!! Would I do it??  I decided to sleep on it, and all I could do was dream of Fire Island in color. I wanted to be “original” and everyone will have the “Brazilian” versions. I then ran back to the store for these $25.00 burst of color.  I also felt safe that there was Black in the mix.  Easy to match!  After all the color, my eye went right to the crisp White version.  Two treats.  Yep!

SILVERTUBE – WARPAINT’S “UNDERTOW”

“Know one has to know what is in my mind tonight”. This dreamy song by Warpaint is earthy and soothing. The perfect song to relax into a new reality.

BLACK WING DOVE – THE DEREK BOOT

Everyone has heard of Red Wing but what about a Black Wing? I ran into the Coach Men’s only shop on Bleecker Street and fell in love with these Black Boots. I have seen lots of similar boots in reds, tans and browns, but this BLACK version made my day. The $298.00 price tag felt a little steep at this moment but will watch for a sale. I love these for Spring!  Don’t get tempted by the Tan color. Those are great too, but Black is where its at if you dare to be different.

MUSIC MANIAC – HURTS

NOW: HURTS – HAPPINESS  NOW (2010)

Who doesn’t want a “Wonderful Life”? This import cd is so gothically romantic. The very 80’s production value and strong voice make you feel like you are floating to a castle somewhere in a “illuminated” palace. The two boys even add Kylie on vocals on “Devotion”.  This music is as grand as you get.   The pop element and catchy tunes bring you back to the days of youth.  It is time for large scale production and escapism.  It won’t Hurt to try this music… you will feel Happiness.

THEN: PAUL YOUNG – BETWEEN TWO FIRES (1986)

OMG, Remember that name? It was very hard to compare Hurts to another singer from the past.  I opened up my vault and quickly my eye ran to Paul Young.  All I remember about him is his distinct beautiful grand voice and the over the top 80’s production. This was it! This works for the now and then. I always love a good homage!!

MUSIC MANIAC: DESTROYER’S KAPUTT

NOW: DESTROYER – KAPUTT (2011)

Now don’t get scared by the name of this group. It is not a heavy metal hair band from the 80’s. It is a new beautiful piece of music that is going to be on my top list of best music of the year. The sound is soothing 70’s with a crisp production. Mellow and relaxing yet flowing too with some great electronics in the mix. Think Steely Dan, Al Stewart, and other storytellers of that era. This a new sound landscape to discover.

THEN: STEELY DAN – AJA   (1977)

This album was one of the great masterpieces of the era. Each song was longer than we were used to, and flowed like a carpet ride along the sky. The instruments were so jazzy and smooth. Go and rediscover this classic piece of art. The cover was so shiny and slick.  I remember the original album cover having a heavy gloss on it to match the sound of the music. This was the first time this was achieved in album cover art. Turn it up and turn down the lights to float into the land of AJA.

MUSIC MANIAC – THE DECEMBERISTS

NOW: THE DECEMBERISTS – THE KING IS DEAD (2011)

“Don’t Carry it all,” “Let the yoke fall from our Shoulders,” “Raise a glass to turnings of the season” —  The seasons are the topics for The Decemberists. They start off this year with one of the best albums of the year. Going through every season with mandolins, violin, acoustic guitar, harmonica, and tambourine. The sound is earthy, comforting and very melodic. The use of words travel through the mountains to higher places.

THEN: NEIL YOUNG – COMES A TIME (1978)

This was one of my favorite Neil Young albums. It also has a very comforting and soothing experience. I thought this was the perfect complement to the above now. This music is timeless and classic and makes you want to put on a pair of boots and denim and climb mountains up a new horizon. “Lotta Love” is a amazing song that will stick with you forever. This is what we all want.

AND THE WINNER IS…

Spring 2011 is a week away. The stores are transitioning to this warm weather season. We are still in a cold snap, but let’s start to dream….That is why the fashion campaigns are out for Spring right now.  It get us in the mood to run out and shop.  Each season I always vote for the designer that lures me in and gets the credit card flowing.  This season I feel that  BOTTEGA VENETA stands out as the best.  It is the blue sky as the background which is the optimism we need for 2011. We can, and should all dream into the sky.  I learned that these wonderful photos were taken by Alex Prager. I wrote about her in my “who are you?” section a few months ago. At least I’m consistent. The birds and blank stares also brings you back to a Hitchcockian era. We all love a little of that. Fly High on this coming fashion season.

WHO ARE YOU? – ANDREJ PEJIC

“Hey Andrej,” we called as we were running down the hall chasing this long-legged, long-haired blond model.  My friend who is a “power force” in the Fashion Industry said “you have to meet this hot model!”  So we ran and took the shot.  HE was so eager to have us take a picture. So friendly and so cute.  HIS name is Andrej Pejic, and he is the new poster boy for fashion androgyny. Since my early discovery of David Bowie the term androgyny has always played with my mind. I love the he/she of it all. This 19-year-old Serbian Australian model has been photographed for a Marc Jacobs ad campaign among many others.  You will be seeing him in all the magazines and on every runway. It is just the beginning and don’t let Andrej play tricks with your mind. He is certainly a treat!!

THE WHITE BOOK, NOT THE WHITE ALBUM – A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE BEATLES

Everyone loves The Beatles with their hair grown over the ears. Blowing in the wind. This is not just any Beatles book. This book is filled with photos of never- before-published pictures from THE WHITE ALBUM in 1968. The photos are extremely playful like most Beatles photos, however you can see how they have grown and the political times were affecting them. The carefree days of the “fab four” were coming to an end. This day, that is captured by photographer Don McCullin, is a wonderful historical moment in musical history.
