THE BEAT POEM – HOWL

Many of you have missed this film so now it is time to get it on DVD. This is a history lesson about Allen Ginsberg’s famous poem called Howl. Starring everyone’s new favorite James Franco. He does an excellent job as playing this interesting character. The animation that is used in this film is a nice surprise. It adds depth and color to a film that can be a little difficult in its content. Time to get into your own beat generation and learn a few things from one of our famous thinkers.

MUSIC MANIAC – ROCKABILLY QUEEN – WANDA JACKSON

I am in love with this Queen.  Her new record is called The Party Ain’t Over. My party has just started after hearing this music. As you know I listen to all types of music, but this puts me in a tail spin.  I smile and rock n roll and I shake, Jack White, formerly of The White Stripes, is the main guitar player and producer.  He brought Wanda back and got her party up and roaring.  Her cover of Bob Dylan’s “Thunder on the mountain” is brilliant.  This is the Queen of Cool.

TREAT OF THE WEEK – HELLO RUDY!

Rudy’s Brand No. 1 Shampoo is my new hip discovery. I feel in love with the large brown plastic bottle and nice easy pump. The funky lettering on the bottle was so retro and masculine. Boys, we know it is hard to find a butch shampoo for the shower. As I was walking through the new hipster palace – the ACE HOTEL – in New York, I saw this cool bottle in a glass case. I was on a search for a new shampoo this week and when they said it was from the original Rudy’s Barber shop in Seattle, it sealed the deal. This retro-hip shop is now a small chain and is part of the ACE HOTEL. They use this in all the rooms, too. The price of $14.00 for this nice size bottle seemed like a good value . Oh, and yes I did smell it and It was one of those smells that my nose instantly said YES to!

MARY, MORRISSEY & ME – Mary McCartney’s “From Where I Stand”

Remember the first Paul McCartney solo record called “McCartney”? Well, Paul is holding his first child Mary wrapped in a blanket.  Some time has past, and Mary is now a promising photographer.  Her new book is  called “From Where I Stand”.  I walked into her opening reception to see this large photo she had taken of Morrissey.  I knew we were instant friends.  I spoke with her about the photo and she  is a big fan and was at the concert but was without the right camera.  She still managed to take one of the best photos of Morrissey that I have seen.  The book is a journey through her world expanding from Arizona, 1995  to The Royal Opera House, 2004.  Her stance is interesting, diverse and from her specific perspective.

BLAST FROM THE PAST – MR. PEANUT

1916 was the birth of Mr. Peanut. He was a silent man for many many years . The Mista is now speaking and it sounds something like Robert Downey Jr.  He is also getting a make over in a gray flannel suit. This guy always had class. His top hat and walking stick always spelled out wealth and respect. I hope we see alot of this man in the future. By now he may really be a Silver Fox.

SILVER FOXY – KARL LAGERFELD

There are so many Silver Foxes that I decided to make a new category to pay tribute to the men who have paved the way and who are on their way.  Who should be the first?  Well, Karl and his famous ponytail is a great choice.  So confident and self assured and a fashion GENIUS.  He always sets off his Silver with Black.  Simple and Chic.  Black ,White and Silver.  So Chanel.  Maybe all the Silver Foxes out there should take a fashion cue from Karl, the King of Fashion.

GET OUT THE GLUE GUN, BABY – BERT STERN – JEWELS

Marilyn, Liz, Twiggy, Jean, Kate = Bert Stern.  His girls go by one name only!  The swinging 60’s come to mind when you hear some of these names. Vogue 1968…. This is when Bert Stern was at his peak. This photo exhibit at The Staley Wise Gallery in Soho is worth checking out. The photos are large and oversized. Very crisp, clean and shiny!  Crystal Applique was the process he used to highlight many of his original photos from this time period.  If you need a smile and feel like swinging with these girls then get all  “DOLLED UP” and put on some jewels.

IDOL EYES – PATTI SMITH

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY PATTI! Everyone knows that DEC 30th is a special night.. This is Patti’s birthday and her performance at Bowery Ballroom in NYC. She also plays on New Year’s Eve. This tradition started 13 years ago. I was lucky enough this year to grab some tickets and go. See above my photo from my Blackberry. Ha!  Patti has been my idol from the late 70’s. I had every single album she released. Not hard because each one is a masterpiece in its own right.  Start at the beginning with “Horses,” and follow the path from there . Her voice and projected stage presence is still as grand as it was when she started. Patti Smith keep going…. Oh BTW: her book “Just Kids” just won a literary award and was released in paperback.  Patti’s voice is one that will be in my heart and soul forever.
