Reason to be Cheerful: That Girl

When reality TV gets to be too much, turn to That Girl!  Any season on DVD will work. I have season 2!  Coming in May will be the release of season 5. This exciting DVD series is in multi-techno color. The 60’s and 70’s styling is so over the top, you have to smile . Marlo Thomas as Ann Marie works . She is like the first “Sex in the City” girl minus the cosmopolitan. No drinking allowed back then on television. Great to watch with friends. Talk about “Feel Good”. Have Fun.

Recession Relevant: Banana Republic days are here again

picture-13

Having recently walked from the basic haven for many reasons to follow, I have found myself back in the door of the Republic of clean. This outpost got too boring, too basic, and too baggy (the three B’s), but now it all looks quite appealing again since Barneys seems to be a place that’s off limits. Not that anything is wrong with the other B’S (Barneys and Bergdorf).  At Banan Republic the assortment, including sportcoats(fitted one size smaller than usual), is worth taking a look at. Outerwear can also be quite cool. Its all about the item!!

Music Maniac: Neko Case

NOWmiddle_cyclone_album_cover2

Middle Cyclone, 2009

Neko who? Case what? She is a woman. This singer must be heard. Her voice is both clear, confident and canary like. Almost country like, yet folkish. Neko is a story-teller who has lots to tell on her new absolutely fabulous new CD. She is not new and has been proving herself for years, but now she has arrived. Add some Neko to your ears. It may hit you like a hurricane.

THEN

Tigerlilly, 1995

Remember her? When she came on the scene in 10,000 maniacs, we were in our college days. The start of “alternative rock”. Her unique voice and storytelling was all mothering. Go back to the pond with Natalie.

Tissue Patrol: Brothers and Sisters

425brotherssisters060508

Talk about Hallmark! Since it’s inception, Brothers and Sisters has been capturing my attention. It all started in  the 70’s (my favorite era for TV), with the Flying Nun.  Sally Field’s voice, even back then was always comforting and soft…always the words of wisdom. While watching B and S, I always know when to  grab for the box of tissues…the soft faded music seems to sink into the wonderful writing that makes this show so special.  Its good to let it out once in awhile and you will always have Sally/Nora to help you through it.

Splurge Galore: Silver Sound

I’m starting this new category because we all love to splurge…especially the silver fox!  There comes a time when you just got to do it! You close your eyes and sign on the dotted line. Most splurges you will enjoy and will make you feel good. These deluxe headphones from Bang and Olufsenare amazing looking with amazing sound! The $160.00 price tag is worth it. Enough with the white…go silver this spring. Silver Lux!

Who Are You? Gareth Pugh

We all love bad boys, and especially a bad boy of fashion. Another master has been plucked from the London design school Central Saint Martin. This school is where all the  theatrical design ghouls begin to stitch and cut their patterns. Gareth is the leader in Form and Volume. His shapes have recently been worn by Beyonce and Kylie. Lets talk performance and theatre!! He is the one to know about and the one to watch. You never know…in a few years he will be on your neck…Perfume/Cologne that is!

Music Maniac: The Trilogy of Morrissey

yearsofrefusal

March is the month of Morrissey. For the past few years, Morrissey has been making some of the most ferocious music starting in 2004 with “You are the Quarry”. His new band is a great compliment to his biting lyrics. The best since the old days of The Smiths. He follows this path in 2006 with “Ringleader of the Tormentors”, another pumped up collection of music. This month’s 2009 “Years of Refusal”, is music that attacks!  Rock’n’ roll that is best played loud is perfect to get the juices flowing. The trilogy of these three CDs brings him to a new place.  I’m looking forward to see how this trilogy ends and how he will evolve. This month Morrissey will be playing the most elegant of places Carnegie Hall.  Lets see how he rips it to threads! I will let you know!

Hair: A Silver Shine

picture-21

It’s coming soon, so begin to refresh your mind. The 1968 production of Hair is coming to Broadway, hippies and all!  Last summer the production was held in Central Park for a limited time, so for those who missed it (like me) you can now go see it on Broadway.  Get your tickets now!  I highly recommend going back in time with the original Broadway cast soundtrack. Remember the original cast recordings are always the most authentic from the time period. Let some sunshine into your life. Let it all hang out!

Krazee Karl

How many rings does one need for only ten fingers? The first scene of this amazing DVD, LARGERFELD CONFIDENTIAL, shows you a bowl of about 500 silver rings that Mister Lagerfeld must pick from for his daily outing from his apartment. The behind scenes of Karl’s life seems like the life of a King…I guess you can call him the King Of Fashion. Even if you are not interested in fashion, you will  love the daily strolls around Paris!  His personality (the movie is subtitled) is one I found fascinating. Chanel’s black and white world is full of color due to the genius that is Karl.

How to meet a Millionaire: Go Ask Patti!

mm1

Bravo to Bravo.  Another hit.  This channel keeps coming up with the most interesting reality shows on the market. They are almost character studies in eccentric personalities. Currently my favorite is Patti Stanger from Millionaire Matchmaker.  Don’t ask me why! Is it her black bob? Her abrasive loudmouth? Im not sure it’s even her advice, but something about her keeps me glued. She seems to be the chic of the moment on reality TV. Housewives are so last minute.
