WHO ARE YOU? – MS. COBAIN

Well, time flies.   She is now 19 years old and the favorite subject of photographer Hedi Slimane.  We all saw Frances Bean Cobain when she was a little girl with her blond hair and wide eyes, then she was gone.  Frances is grown up and has become the darling of the fashion world.  Are we surprised?  I was very excited about this photo shoot.  Hedi has photographed her mother Courtney Love for a now out-of-print book.  I guess it’s a mother/daughter moment.  Feels like teen spirit all over again 20 years later.  Just in time for Nirvana’s 20th anniversary.

I discovered this wonderful music this summer from an adorable young man who was floating in the pool overlooking the bay.  Listening to this wonderful music.  I was thrilled that someone his age could enjoy the music from this golden era, and make this come alive again to become fresh and new.  I highly recommend you buy this double disc set and go on the journey that is COCKTAIL DISCO.

GET DOWN ON THE FLOOR

That is what I literally did at The B-52’s last concert in New York City at Irving Plaza.  I was standing at about the 3rd row when the woman next to me pointed out the guitar pick on the floor.   I bent down and grabbed my first official concert pick.  Keith Strickland is the original guitarist and is responsible for making The B’s tick.   I love the original vintage-looking logo printed on it.  This party is out of bounds!  Maybe next time Keith Richards. . .  I will keep dreaming. . .

HIDDEN GEM – Red Hook Lobster Pound

This lobster pound is down and dirty!  The lobster is so fresh and delicious.  I met my sister who lives close by and my friend came along.  We all shared a lobster roll (btw made with no mayo), and waited for our dinner of 1-1/2 pound lobsters with the works come alive.   My sister has a beautiful garden with a hammock which provided a magical setting for our claw cracking evening.  We told stories and laughed and made our own ‘New England” in our minds.

WHO ARE YOU? – JEREMY KOST

I have had the pleasure to meet a few times the “Prince of Polaroids.”  Jeremy Kost is a photographer who I am very excited about.  Every time I see his wonderful works, I can feel his creativity and energy.  He just published a fantastic book called “It’s Always Darkest Before Dawn.”  Go buy it!  I was lucky to join him at his book signing in New York at the Marc Jacobs bookshop.   He signed my book and I was able to get a limited edition reproduction of one of his images.  I also happen to own a Polaroid from 2007 that he took of Tinsley Mortimer, as she was deconstructed from a night club.   Her hair is disheveled and she looks like a young Ann-Margret.  I just love that.  Heavy make up running down her eyes.  Rough night it seems, and Jeremy always seems to capture a diamond-in-the-rough moment of fun!

TREAT OF THE WEEK- ORBIT WHITE BUBBLEMINT

OMG!  I’m in outer space with this flavor.  First of all Bubblegum. . .with MINT!  Then it also WHITENS your teeth while your are having fun.  This gum is great for bubbles, snapping, cracking, and anything else you would like.  Go treat yourself to a 3 pack and get cracking!  Everyone loves this flavor, and you will be very popular when you start handing this out to new friends.  Blast off with Orbit.   It is a nice treat and will brighten up your smile.  Duane Reade here I come!

CAMI and GAGA

Two of my favorite LADIES!  Just blocks away from my home at The Gramercy Park Hotel.  This pair is meant to be together. . .

  • They love 5 ” designer platform shoes.
  • They love The Gramercy Park Hotel.
  • They are both Italian.
  • They love being Blond.
  • They favor Rick Owens clothing.
  • They are both Creatures of the Night.

Baby, they were born this way. . .

TREAT OF THE WEEK – THIS BOOK IS BANANAS!

A Woody Allen history lesson for less than $10 bucks!  Now that’s a New York bargain.  The Masters of Cinema put out this book which caught my eye in Marc Jacob’s “Bookmarc” store.  I saw the great price and snatched it up for a gift for one of my best friends.  She loved it and happens to be a real New Yorker and a real Woody fan.  The cover from “Sleeper” made me get kooky in the store.  Sleeper was one of my favorites, and I think the first Woody films I saw as a kid.  I found this book on Amazon.com, and now you can run and get the under $10.00 lesson.  I ran and bought 2 more.  One for myself and one for a gift for whoever is naughty and nice!

Paging Dr. Colbert, Paging Dr. Colbert

Dr. Colbert, please pop into my living room like Dr. Bombay did in “Bewitched”!  These products are magical.  David Colbert is the MD behind this new skin care line called COLBERT M.D. I was pleased at his slick and modern packaging. Very “unisex”!  Love that word — it is so 70s, but this line of products is so now. Dr. Colbert has a major celebrity clientele, and who doesn’t want to look like the rich and famous?  The product that has embraced me is the “Intensify” Facial Discs. They are quick and easy to use and very unique. A circular motion makes the locomotion begin.  Your face will glow with an intensity not to be believed.  New collagen production begins and your on your way.  Could it be magic?

MUSIC MANIAC – JUSTIN VIVIAN BOND

NOW: JUSTIN VIVIAN BOND – DENDROPHILE (2011)

Take me back to the 70’s, JVB. Your new album (not cd) is amazing.  We like old school terms like  albums and your new song “The Golden Age of Hustlers.”  Your covers of Joni Mitchell, Karen Carpenter, and Joan Baez are all so interesting and warm.  I loved your performance at Bowery Ballroom for your launch of these new songs.  It is so refreshing to hear this album of quiet and comforting songs in the age of Gaga and Britney.  It is a nice vibe and performance. I have been recommending this to everyone.  See you at Joe’s Pub, baby!

THEN:   DAVID BOWIE – ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS (1972)

“People stared at the makeup on his face.”  This line, from the song – Lady Stardust.  This is the first track and first line from side two of this classic Bowie album.  I played this over and over and over.  All night long… Without this music, I do not know who I would be today.  It shaped me into the man I am.  This album I found in my older sister’s room and instantly moved it into my room, and onto my record player.  David Bowie became my idol and the posters of his face were splattered on every wall.  I followed his career and waited for the day that he released his new material.  I grew up with all of his “changes.”  I even had a Bowie pen pal! (pre- Internet)  Thank you Ziggy for making it all OK!
