IDOL EYES/MUSIC MANIAC – PJ HARVEY

One of my music idols for over twenty years has been PJ HARVEY.  She has has over 8 cds and many side projects as well.  The rock critics are gushing and every album has a different feeling with a different type of edge.  She sings in many octaves and can belt out some loud noise, and also the softest whisper you have ever heard.  She plays guitar and has a reptilian personality.  Her performances are amazing — I went to Terminal 5 recently to see her, once again.  Her music is quality and also for the explorer.  Here is a quick summary of some of Polly Jean’s library:

2011 – Let England Shake –  this belongs to the soldiers and the land-quirky
2007 – White Chalk – bare bones piano
2004 – Uh Huh Her – back to raw and hard
2000 – Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea – Straight forward rock
1998 – Is This Desire – Hard and Soft – classic PJ
1995 – To Bring You My Love –  epic!!!
1992 – Dry – Stripped down and raw where it all began

ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE SILVER FOX IN THE CITY

Being a fan of most singer song writers, I had to run to BOOKMARC in the West Village to meet one of my favorites, Rufus Wainwright, and grab a signed copy of the new book “One Day in the Life of Rufus Wainwright“.   As we all know, Rufus is a man of many words, but I was not.  When I got to the table to meet Rufus and get my book signed, I literally became speechless.  It just happened and I was not able to tell him how wonderful his music is and how it moves me towards many emotions.  I also got to see my old friend Tim Hailand who published and took the wonderful photographs in this  spot on book.  I love the large-size format of the book which enhances the quality of the photos, and really takes you into the life of Rufus.  The Old English text is also very charming.  Now turn your phone on “vibrate” and start viewing the inside story.

Pewter Patent Pusher

As many of you know I have been pushing patent leather handbags for many years, but now this shiny and colorful material is hitting the track. These pewter/gunmetal running sneakers from Diesel are on my feet.  You’ve heard of a “Gotta Have It”?  Well, as I running out of Diesel in Union Square, I had to have them!  I backtracked and went right to the shoe dept.  When I tried them on, I felt like Dorothy in her ruby slippers, but instead mine were hip, cool and hot with a touch of cobalt blue to take me on the streets on Manhattan. Compliments galore!  Add some shine to your sneakers this spring and feel like you’re over the rainbow!

SILVERTUBE – BETH DITTO – I WROTE THE BOOK

Homage to Madonna, Beth gives it her all, and we love the make up on her face. What grace and style done Beth’s way!

FOXY SONG OF THE MONTH – SPANISH TEENAGER by CASEY SPOONER

This first solo effort by Casey Spooner of the group Fischerspooner is a big departure. The first listening made me think of early Bowie, a classic rock song with all the time changes of  70’s progressive rock. It is catchy, trippy and glamorous all at the same time. Just stripped down of the color and spandex. Still has the space-age moonage daydream feel of Casey.

WHO ARE YOU? – JOEY ARIAS

The year is 1979 in New York City.  I was straight off the train from Long Island right up to 59th street to go to the famous clothing boutique FIORUCCI. This was one of the places that made me feel accepted and cool.  I used to run to buy their “safety jeans”.  Tight-fitting and narrowed-legged.  Great to show of those pointy Cappezzio shoes from that time.  As I walked in the store I was greeted by a friendly man who was a one of a kind!   We all knew him as “Joey”.  A few weeks later I was watching SNL staring David Bowie and there was “Joey” on TV singing and dancing with my one and only idol.  I almost died!!  April 21st is a show called JOEY ARIAS Live At Town Hall.  He will be doing his famous channeling of Billie Holiday and other amazing performances.  I will be in the fourth row with the same excitement that I had 32 years ago. This man is the chill in my spine and a icon that is close to home like that night he entered into my living room on my television set singing the Bowie song TVC15!!

VISUAL ALERT – The “Homage Queen” Strikes Again

The new cover of the Lady Gaga record brought me back into the classic 1974 David Bowie album “Diamond Dogs”.  He transforms into an animal.  On the new Lady Gaga, she transforms into a piece of machinery.  Bowie is classic rock and Gaga is going after a concept record that is classic and has longevity.  Only time will tell if Born This Way is a “Future Legend”.

WHO ARE YOU? – KARLHEINZ WEINBERGER

In 1958, Weinberger met members of a small band of teenagers and began photographing them both at his home, as well as public parks and fairgrounds where the group gathered. They were Swiss rebels! They adopted a powerful gang identity of embellished jeans, motorcycle jackets and enlarged belt buckles. The fashion crowd loves this. Many stylists and designers have looked to Weinberger’s photos for inspiration. The Swiss Institute /Contemporary Art in Soho is showing these wonderful photos. I was very happy to learn about Karlheinz Weinberger and be in the know! A Rebel with a Cause!

MIDNIGHT AT THE OASIS – MIDNIGHT RECOVERY CONCENTRATE

Bring this camel to sleep.  Kiehls is very smart!  Have you noticed that they LOVE to give you samples and then get you hooked?  Well this time I said no. They gave me this small bottle with a nose dropper in it, in a funny blue glass color. It looked like some type of messy oil. They said put on at night.  All I could think about was oil all over my pillow cases.  No, thanks!  I gave it to my neighbor who the next day looked smoother and younger overnight!!  She said no mess you gotta do it!  I then tried this “DRY OIL” and then next day my skin was regenerated and repaired. I’m a junkie, running back for my fix of free samples.  I know I will breakdown soon and buy the bottle for $43.00 and become a real addict but who cares.  I’m repaired!!

The Day The World Turned Day-Glo

This brand new gallery called Dorian Grey Gallery has extended its show of Stephen Sprouse drawings entitled “Jet Boy”.  I went to the opening and loved the vibe. Miss Guy the D.J. was setting the mood with his black bar ret and rock and roll.  X-ray-spex, Bowie, The NY Dolls, Lou Reed, and lots of edgy glam set against the wonderful drawings by Sprouse.  These hardly ever seen drawing were some sight and collection.  East 9th street was buzzing.  Sketches of Andy, Candy, Chuck and Debbie were sleek hot and cool.  This show was JET HOT and the music by Miss Guy was as shiny as a Diamond Dog!
