2012 KICK START: LADY GAGA

I am constantly asked by people to help them shop and buy gifts for themselves and others.  I guess I look like a walking catalog.  Anyway, I just recommended this book as a impressive gift for the music and photography lover.  I tested this book out myself and purchased it on Amazon for an amazing low price!  I expected a small-to-medium size book.  I received a very large, oversized coffee table book of amazing photos of Gaga taken by Terry Richardson who is the “man- boy wonder of fashion photography.”  Terry is total downtown edgy!   What a perfect collaboration. This is a wonderful, candid look into the crazy and kooky world of The Lady.  Terry’s lens captures it all while keeping with his raw and of the moment signature style. This twosome is a not a bad romance, a gorgeous one with a capital G.

SILVERFOX LIVE

Seeing live music is one of the joys in life of the Silver Fox.  It is a treat to hear the music come alive and to feel the energy of many of the wonderful performers I have been fortunate to see.  The past month has been a British Bombshell of great music.  I would like to share some photos of my Brit Week:

Bryan Ferry – a chameleon classic.

Portishead – first show in 11 years.

Ladytron – on tour to promote “Gravity the Seducer.”

BLAST FROM THE PAST – PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE

The year is 1974.  Who remembers this obscure movie staring Paul Williams? Remember the funny looking man with blond hair?  Don’t ask me why I was so afraid of this rock thriller.  Anything with rock music in the 70’s was cool but this?  Brian De Palma directed, but who cared about him back then.  Was this a new Phantom of the Rock Opera?  I saw that this was being shown in Brooklyn at BAM and I immediately went under the covers and put in ear plugs.  The DVD might be a great joke gift for the holidays.  I might even want to watch it!

WHO ARE YOU? – CARINE ROITFELD

All fashion insiders know about Carine, She was worked very closely with Tom Ford for many years at Gucci to style and advise him on the 1970’s. This era is the one that they both embraced and brought to the fore front of fashion through the house of Gucci.  She then later went on to be the editor-in-chief at French Vogue.  Now she is a free agent and a MUSE for Barneys New York and many other designers around the world.  Her carefree style and French chic aesthetic has become the worldwide example of effortless luxury chic.  I’m excited now to flip through the glamorous pages of Irreverent. Now we can all be part of Carine’s world.

IDOL EYES – LAURA NYRO

She is my Sexy Mama, Spiritual Mother, I’m so proud of Laura.  Her voice and soulfulness is so soothing and has helped me get thru many difficult times. I remember seeing her perform at The Bottom Line in NYC many times. These memories will stay with me forever.  At the time I didn’t realize what magic it was and how I would never see my idol again.  I will cherish all her songs and performances and memories of playing her albums in my room growing up.  My sisters had these records and it was a huge influence on my life.  I didn’t quite understand Laura at such a young age, but I knew it was special and her voice spoke to me.  Thank you, Laura and we love you and will always remember you!!

AMY

I wanted to post this photo just to remember what a unique and greatly talented woman Amy was.  We can remember her from all her wonderful music.  Please check out her first album FRANK, which showcases her voice in a raw and jazzy mode.  A new album will be released shortly and we can embrace her talents once more from her beautiful emotional music.

MUSIC MANIAC – FLORENCE + THE MACHINE

NOW: Florence + The Machine – Ceremonials  (2011)

This is no sophomore slump! “Lay me down” she sings in “What the Water Gave Me.”  Florence is back, bigger and more lush than ever.  She was grand before but now it is a ballroom.  It is dark, romantic and robust.  Goth and Gospel. Florence Welch roars through this album and proves herself to be part of the British Englishwomen of rock, AKA Siouxsie, Kate Bush and PJ Harvey.  All of them, I’m a huge fan of.  The scale of this music is inflated and turbulent and it will send chills up and down your skin.  Dark shadows is a Ceremony!

THEN:  Siouxsie and and The Banshees – A Kiss in the Dreamhouse (1982)

Florence and Siouxsie should really do a duet  together.  The Queens of British Goth unite!  Florence is the new goth and Siouxsie is royalty.  I felt that this 1982 album had the same lush and grand sound that is part of Florence’s current sound.  The song “Melt” is a classic from this album and worth a listen. The scale and grandiose feeling makes you want to put on your velvet robe and prance through a wistfully enchanted forest.

BLAST FROM THE PAST – BOYS IN THE BAND – “MAKING THE BOYS”

I was lucky enough to see this wonderful documentary in the theatres but now it is available on DVD.  This documentary is about Mart Crowley’s groundbreaking 1968 play and 1970 film “The Boys in the Band.”  It is full of history and full of surprises.  I found this story to be most interesting and it also includes some information on Natalie Wood, too.
The new generation can now get married and are free to express themselves but, like all history, it is important to know where the roots of our liberation came from so we don’t take things for granted and remember our mentors who fought so hard so we can be where we are today.

IDOLS, ICONS AND QUEENS, OH MY! – GILLES LARRAIN – IDOLS

Run to the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York to see this wonderful photography show.  I was lucky to go to the opening and meet the artist.  He has dug up these wonderful images of his friends in New York City from 1970 -1973.  I was amazed to see the flamboyant and creative Harvey Fierstein in one of the images.  I never knew him as part of an “in crowd.”  These photos have a painted quality which gives them a dark and eerie feeling.  The 70’s never looked so explosively liberating !  “If you got it then flaunt it!”  That seems to be the rage in these wildly colorful photographs.

ROOM 1742 – MONTREAL, CANADA

The suite was on the 17th floor of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal.  The date was May 26th to June 2nd 1969.  John and Yoko stayed in bed for 8 days in order to “Give Peace a Chance.”  I recently went to this hotel on vacation, and noticed this book on the counter.  Why John and Yoko?  So I asked and they immediately escorted my friends and myself up to see the “John Lennon Suite.”  This is where I took these photos on the walls.  It was all set up as it was in 1969 except the position of the bed had been moved.  I was thrilled to see history right before my eyes and under my feet.  I ran to buy this book for my collection and the memory.  This is a great holiday gift with warmth and feeling.  A great price for a remarkable memorable and moving chronicle of that wondrous event.  BTW, this book also comes in French!
