YOU GOTTA LOOK SHARP – MAISON 24

Diane and Alexandra Von Furstenberg were at arm’s length to me at the opening party for my friends Louis and Alison’s amazing and zany new store MAISON 24 in NYC.  This store is filled with a great mix of trendsetting items which makes for a fun and very unique shopping experience.  Everything you touch and feel makes you smile.  The world of home furnishings and gift items are exploding with color, wit and charm.  Lucite and Lacquer is being poured all over the store.  I couldn’t get enough!  I love that the gorgeous Alexandra is looking at me and not the professional photographer taking her picture.  She designs the line of Lucite that I’m in love with.  Let’s just call her Lady Lucite!

SILVERTUBE – DURAN DURAN

The year is 1981… This song appeared and my life changed.  I bought this 12″ single from the local import store.  Duran Duran will be a memory forever.  I recently saw them, over 30 years later, at Madison Square Garden with my best friend from 30 years ago.  She reminded me about this song from our past and the warm and fuzzy feeling reappeared.  Thank you Duran, and Kelly, for being part of my life.  Simon LeBon still has it and so do we!!

TREAT OF THE WEEK – GINGER, BABY!

Ooooh that smell.  Can’t you smell that smell?  I’m not usually crazy about ginger, but I needed a pick-me-up one day, and my nose led me to the Origins shop.  The smell and beautiful packing of this soap said “buy me.”  This is also a great gift!  Start buying now for the holidays and you will be happy to “have it in the house.”  I love my gift draw!  Unfortunately this bar is for me.  Sorry, Charlie.  Next time.

TOGGLE TACKLED!

Everyone knows by now that the Toggle Coat is the number one must-have for fall.  As I walk down the city streets I’d see the “toggle brigade” coming toward me.  I wondered if I would join and I finally did.  I searched high and low, from Prada to Burberry, from New  York to Chicago.  I finally found the ultimate one at Uniqlo in the J+ collection by Jil Sander.  It comes in charcoal grey, and heather blue.  I bought the interesting blue version.  The quality and fit is perfect and so was the price.  Go fetch this quickly and join the ranks!

SPLURGE GALORE – YELLOW BRICK ROAD

Chukka Chukka Boom Boom.  Fall is all about the new Chukka Boot.  Goodbye desert boots and hello funky soles.  One of the latest trends in men’s footwear is the “unexpected” soles.  The yellow rubber sole paired to the beautiful Bordo colored pebbled leather upper is a fine mix.  So, I will be dreaming down the yellow brick road for this new take of a comfortable classic!

The Envelope Please – Best Fall Advertising Campaign – LOUIS VUITTON

Every Season I look through pages and pages and pages, to see what jumps out at me in all the glossy fashion magazines.  I play a game with myself to see what I think is the best and has a unique appeal compared to all the others.  This Fall 2011 season I’m loving the 60’s night crawlers in the LV ads.  BLACK is back and the texture is pure Fuzzy.  The caps, the gloves, and the crocodile ROCKS!  Black Patent Leather Rules.  Call them Call Girls, I call them Rich Girls!

THE SHOW IS OVER – McQUEEN

Savage Beauty. . . The exhibit has ended.  The crowds are gone.  The lines have disappeared.  The Man who was supposed to be made of Metal has passed on.  All we have is the photos, the dresses, the history, the great fashion moments of a man who was a bad boy and a dark romantic.  His SAVAGE BEAUTY is one to be remembered and stored in the houses of geniuses.   Alexander McQueen made a short mark but a GIANT leap into the minds and hearts of everyone he touched through the beauty his talent exuded.

WHO ARE YOU? – CANDICE SWANEPOEL

This fall everyone will know who Candice is. . .she will be everywhere in the new Tom Ford for Women fall ad campaign.  Many already know this beauty from all her work for Victoria’s Secret.  I know her from a evening with my best friend Ivan Bart. (see past Who are you?) Candice, Ivan and I walked into a very exclusive party at a restaurant called Indochine.  My entrance to a party with a Victoria’s Secret angel on my arm was not to be believed.  She embraced the Silver Fox in the City, and we chatted at the bar for some time.  As the party became more crowded she must have departed as I looked all over for my “Princess” who left the ball.  I was told that at a later meeting, my name came up and she said “Oh you mean the Silver Fox In The City.”  My dream came true. 😉

CINDY, KATE and FRED, OH MY!

I usually refer to them as “Kate and Cindy” from 52-Girls my favorite song from The B-52’s.  This time I went in the order of the photo from their latest concert at Irving Plaza at Gramercy Park.   There was no stopping the Silver Fox as I slithered through the crowd and ended up about 4 rows from the stage.  All I did that night was sing at the top of my lungs with my new friend standing next to me.  She knew every word as we screamed “Don’t get off the Patio” into each others ears.  We danced up a storm .  It was a non stop cabaret of FUN!   As we went “down down down” to the floor during Rock Lobster, I flashback to J.D’s basement in 1982.

MUSIC MANIAC – X-RAY SPEX

The Day the World Turned Day Glo was 1978 when Poly Styrene the punk singer of this band released this album.  I purchased this in the early 80’s and loved her cockney accent and brashness.  It was new for punk to be led by a female singer.  She also had a sweetness to her voice and personality.   She recently passed away at 53 and I wanted to pay tribute to her in my blog.  This classic album is a must for any music collector.  It is on every critic’s list as a pioneer album in a era that won’t be forgotten.  She played CBGB in 1978 and made “Oh Bondage!” an anthem.  She also influenced so many female singers that followed her.  She loved the designer Vivienne Westwood where she developed her own personal style.  As she sang “Warrior in Woolworth’s,” she will be remembered as a the original Commander!
